What we test

What a smog check covers

In California the test answers one question: are the parts that clean up your exhaust there and doing their job? What we look at depends on the vehicle’s age and fuel:

On-board diagnostics

On newer vehicles we plug a test computer into the diagnostic connector under the dash to see whether the car’s own self-checks have finished and whether any fault codes are stored.

Visual inspection

We look over the emissions hardware — catalytic converter, fuel-vapor system and related parts — to confirm it’s all in place, hooked up and factory-correct.

Functional checks

The check-engine light, the gas cap and other emissions functions are tested to make sure they work as designed.

Older-vehicle testing

Older vehicles use different test procedures and equipment. If yours is 1999 or older, call ahead so we’re ready.

Diesel smog checks

Eligible diesel vehicles get their own inspection. Heavy-duty diesels over 14,000 lbs fall under Clean Truck Check instead.

STAR certification

If the DMV directs your vehicle to a STAR station, we can certify it — we’re STAR-certified.

Who needs one

When California requires a smog check

California asks for a smog test at three moments: your biennial registration renewal (the renewal notice tells you when), the sale or transfer of a vehicle, and the first California registration of a car brought in from out of state.

A few vehicles skip the test altogether: anything fully electric, gas models built in 1975 or earlier, and diesels from 1997 or earlier. Newer gas and hybrid cars get a grace period too — for roughly their first eight model years the DMV charges an abatement fee in place of the biennial test. If your notice says otherwise, the notice wins; questions? Call (805) 644-5152.

Smog check guide FAQ

Smog check questions

What is checked during a smog check?

On most newer vehicles: the computer’s self-check status and fault codes, a look at the emissions hardware, and checks such as the warning light and fuel cap. Older vehicles follow a different procedure.

How long is a smog certificate valid?

A smog certificate is generally valid for 90 days from the date it’s issued, so plan your test close to when you’ll renew or transfer the vehicle.

Which vehicles don’t need a smog check?

Electric vehicles never need one; neither do gas models from 1975 or earlier or diesels from 1997 or earlier. Newer gas and hybrid cars pay an abatement fee instead during roughly their first eight model years.

Do I need a smog check to sell my car?

Usually, yes — a change of ownership generally requires a valid smog certificate. Very new vehicles are often exempt.

I just moved to California. Do I need a smog check?

In most cases, yes. The DMV wants a passing California smog result before it issues California plates for a vehicle previously registered elsewhere.

Will I pass with my check-engine light on?

No. If that light is lit on an OBD-II vehicle, the test can’t pass — get the underlying problem looked at first.

How much is a smog check at Xpress Smog?

Prices vary by vehicle type, and our coupon takes $15 off. Phone (805) 644-5152 and we’ll quote yours.

Need a smog check or Clean Truck Check?

Most smog checks are walk-in. For older vehicles, RVs and heavy-duty trucks, call and we'll book you in.
